Make an Overflowing Container Garden for Full Sun

The secret to the beauty of these container gardens is the contrasting plant colors used and the fact that the plants spill over the sides of the container.

On a trip to Jackson, I toured around the town a bit, checking out some new places. In the parking lot where the new Whole Foods is located there is a shopping center that had some amazing full-sun container gardens. Mississippi summers can get very hot, and the plants in these containers are selected to handle the heat and full sun.

This planter was more than overflowing, but the colors were fantastic!

It contains

  • Purple Heart Wandering Jew (Tradescantia pallida)
  • Lantana (in gold)
  • Sweet potato vines (Ipomea batatas) in dark purple and lime green
  • Caladiums

I have to say that mixing lime green with dark purple is a favorite color combination of mine. This next container had a vibrant coleus mixed in with it that provided a pop of color. This container included

  • New Guinea impaiens in red and pink
  • Sweet potato vine(Ipomea batatas) in deep purple
  • Coleus Golden Dreams
