Great Color Combinations: Companion Plants to Pair with Sweet Potato Vine

Sweet potato vines make great companion plants in containers and raised beds. They are easy to grow and require little maintenance. Match them with either a contrasting or complementary color for a great combination. Here are a few of my favorite plant color combinations for sweet potato vines.

Contrasting Colors for Sweet Potato Vine

My absolute favorite color combination is dark purple with lime green. The pairing of these dark purple, almost black, plants mixed with the bright lime green plants is so great!

  • Lime green or yellow coleus with purple sweet potato vine
  • lime green and purple sweet potato vine with a tall green-leaved tropical plant like bird of paradise
  • Dark purple elephant ears with lime green sweet potato vine
  • Purple sweet potato vine with asparagus fern

Although I don’t have any photos of this combination – I think that mixing either of the sweet potato vine colors with white flowers and leaves would also be a great combination. There’s an example of the lime green/white flower combination here: http://www.botanicalblitz.com/wp-content/gallery/summer/novak-15.jpg

Complementary/Matching Colors for Sweet Potato Vines

Although I prefer brightly contrasting colors, sometimes you are looking for a more monochromatic or complementary color combination. Here are a few that I have come across in gardens.

  • Green elephant ears and green sweet potato vine
  • Purple sweet potato vine and purple heart

Missed the Mark?

This color combination gave me a little bit of trouble. To my eye, it’s not quite right. While the lime greens of the sweet potato vine and the edge of the coleus are close, they’re not quite the same and the maroon of the coleus leaves does not go well, in my opinion. What do you think (comment below)?

What’s your favorite plant to combine with sweet potato vine? I’d love to see photos or hear your ideas.
